Knowledge about indoor lighting

How to find the right lighting for your indoor project

When it comes to indoor lighting, there are a multitude of options. Due to the importance of light in everyday life, countless shapes, colors, strengths and qualities have been created within lighting through many years of development. Across homes, businesses, institutions and shops, there are therefore categories of lamps for every need.

Specialized luminaires with special properties have also become more widespread, and are accelerating in specific areas. The variety of lighting has become so great today that within the same category, you can find lighting for very different purposes.

When it comes to distinguishing between light fixtures that can be used indoors or outdoors, there are therefore differences in the range of specifications of the categories that can be considered. Factors such as mounting, IP class, light shape, savings opportunities and lifespan can be used to investigate whether the right light is being chosen.

Installation of indoor lighting

With the wide range of luminaires available on the market, designed for different locations and areas, there is of course a wide variety of mounting methods that different luminaires use. It may therefore be a good idea to consider mounting so that you are sure of your options. Above you will find mounting options such as surface-mounted, recessed, suspended and wall-mounted.

The luminaires' IP classes (protection class)

In cases where the environment where lighting is required is not always clean and dry, it may be important to consider the tightness and water resistance of the luminaire. To ensure that the luminaire can withstand these environments, it is therefore reasonable to examine the luminaire's IP class, also known as the enclosure class.

If you examine the details of a given luminaire, you will often find a point called IP, followed by 2 numbers. These numbers are independent of each other and tell you how durable the luminaire is in different areas.

The first number tells you how well the luminaire performs in terms of resistance to dust particles or small pieces of dirt. The scale here goes from 0-6, where 6 means that the luminaire is completely dustproof. If the first number in a luminaire's IP class is low, this of course does not mean that the luminaire is unsustainable.

The scale is usually good to use if the fixture is to be used under special conditions where there may be high amounts of dust and dirt.

The second number of the IP class indicates the product's water resistance. The scale here goes from 0-8, where 8 means that the fixture will not be damaged even if it is kept under water for a long time.

As with the luminaire's dust resistance, the second number of the luminaire only becomes relevant if the luminaire is installed in exposed areas. An example of where the second number of the IP class is less relevant could be if a luminaire is to be installed in a general living room, where the luminaire does not need to have any special water resistance.
